Newark, NJ- The Rutgers-Newark softball team steps out with a sweep over Hunter college, winning 6-5 and 5-4, both in an exciting walk-off fashion.
In the first game, the Scarlet Raiders jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first inning to take control. After a quiet stretch through the middle innings, Rutgers-Newark broke the game open in the sixth with a three-run frame before scoring the winning run in the seventh.
Offensively, the Raiders totaled 13 hits, showcasing depth throughout the lineup. Soncia Hughes led the charge with a triple and multiple hits, while Ellery Mahony contributed with a bunt single in a key scoring sequence. Laura Abreu added an RBI bunt single late to cap the scoring, and Keelin O'Brien chipped in throughout the match up, going 4-4 in the game.
In the second game of this double header sweep, Rutgers-Newark battled through a tightly contested game and came away with a 5–4 victory over Hunter in extra innings.
After a scoreless first inning, the Scarlet Raiders got on the board in the second and continued to chip away offensively, finishing with nine hits on the day. Hunter answered with runs in the second and fifth innings, taking advantage of key opportunities to keep the pressure on.
Rutgers-Newark's offense found a spark in the middle innings, highlighted by a two-run fourth that helped swing momentum back in their favor.
Maddy Haack provided a big moment at the plate with a triple, later coming around to score, while Gabriela Forese delivered an RBI single to bring home a run and keep the offense rolling. Kayla Cardozo added extra-base power with a double, and Keelin O'Brien contributed with an RBI single to extend the lead.
In the circle, Rutgers-Newark used a combination of pitchers to hold off Hunter late in the game, shutting the door in the final frame to secure the win.
With the game tied heading into extras, the Scarlet Raiders executed when it mattered most. Dana Rene delivered the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning, driving in the decisive run and sealing the victory for Rutgers-Newark.
