Softball Splits Conference Doubleheader

NEWARK NJ-  The Scarlet Raiders took on the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights in a NJAC conference doubleheader matchup on Saturday, April 18th. The Raiders ended the day with one loss, 10-7, and one win, 8-4.

Game one was a close contest where Rutgers-Newark had strong individual performances throughout the lineup, but a late rally by New Jersey City proved to be the difference in the 10–7 setback.

The Scarlet Raiders were powered offensively by several key contributors. Josephine Morales delivered a standout performance in the middle of the order, going 2-for-2 with a team-high four RBIs and a sacrifice fly, consistently driving in runs in crucial moments. Maddy Haack added a spark at the top of the lineup, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, helping to set the tone offensively.

At the top of the order, Mariah Rimas-McManus also turned in a strong showing, collecting two hits and scoring twice, while Kayla Cardozo contributed a 2-for-3 effort with a double, an RBI, and a walk to keep innings alive.

Rutgers-Newark built momentum early, plating two runs in the second inning before erupting for three more in the third to take control. The Scarlet Raiders later added two additional runs in the fifth, capitalizing on timely hitting and disciplined at-bats to extend their lead.

In the circle, the Scarlet Raiders saw efforts from Mia Aquino and Soncia Hughes, who combined to work through a challenging NJCU lineup. Despite carrying a lead into the later innings, Rutgers-Newark was unable to hold off the Gothic Knights, who used a big fifth inning and late offensive push to complete the comeback.

In game two, Rutgers-Newark used a balanced offensive attack and a complete-game effort in the circle to earn an 8-4 victory.

The Scarlet Raiders tallied 10 hits, with multiple players contributing at the plate. Kayla Cardozo led the way with two hits and two RBI, while Keelin O'Brien and Ellery Mahony each added a pair of hits and drove in a run. Rutgers-Newark consistently applied pressure, drawing five walks and swiping three bases to keep innings alive.

After New Jersey City plated four runs, Rutgers-Newark responded with timely hitting to regain control of the game. The Scarlet Raiders capitalized on scoring opportunities throughout, stringing together key hits to build separation.

In the circle, Mia Aquino delivered a strong performance, tossing a complete game. Aquino scattered seven hits and allowed four runs while working through traffic and limiting further damage to secure the win.
