CAMDEN, N.J. – The Rutgers-Newark baseball team dropped a pair of tightly contested games in an NJAC doubleheader against Rutgers-Camden on Saturday.
Game one was a back-and-forth battle that ended in heartbreak for the Scarlet Raiders, who fell 12-11 in walk-off fashion. Rutgers-Newark held the lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Rutgers-Camden rallied for five runs in the frame to steal the victory, ending the game scoring on a wild pitch.
Despite the tough finish, the Scarlet Raiders' offense was strong throughout, totaling 14 hits and scoring in five different innings, including a four-run eighth inning that helped build their late lead. Michael Weinbel paced the lineup with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, including a home run, three runs scored, and three walks. Joseph Bernardo drove in a game-high five RBI, while Gilroy Prial added two hits, two RBI, and three runs scored.
In game two, Rutgers-Newark struck first but could not sustain the momentum, falling 13-3 in the nightcap. The Scarlet Raiders recorded nine hits but stranded 11 runners on base. Gilroy Prial once again led the offense with two hits, while RJ Kernan added an RBI. Rutgers-Newark pushed across runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Rutgers-Camden pulled away late to complete the sweep.
Rutgers-Newark will look to bounce back on Thursday, April 9th, as the Scarlet Raiders travel to William Paterson for another NJAC matchup.
