EWING, N.J. — Rutgers-Newark dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader against The College of New Jersey on Sunday, falling 4-1 in game one and 6-1 in game two.
In the opener, the Scarlet Raiders were held in check offensively, scoring just once on seven hits. Despite the loss, Joey Santi delivered a strong outing, allowing just three hits and two runs over seven innings while striking out three. Joseph Bernardo and RJ Kernan led the offense with two hits apiece, accounting for more than half of the team's production. After five scoreless innings, Rutgers-Newark broke through in the sixth, but TCNJ answered late with four runs across the final three frames to pull away.
Game two saw the Lions take control early, scoring twice in the first inning and adding to the lead in the second and sixth. Gilroy Prial paced the Scarlet Raiders at the plate with two hits, while Luke Hagen provided a bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing scoreless relief while allowing three hits and striking out three. Rutgers-Newark pushed across a run in the eighth to avoid the shutout but managed just four hits in the 6-1 defeat.
Across the doubleheader, the Scarlet Raiders totaled just two runs while TCNJ combined for 10, using timely hitting and strong pitching to complete the sweep.
