NEWARK, NJ- In the first game of the double header match up, Rutgers-Newark showed resilience but fell short in a 5-3 NJAC loss to Montclair State. After two quiet innings, the Scarlet Raiders broke through in the third, plating three runs on timely hitting to take an early lead. Sonica Hughes doubled the clear the bases and knocked in all three of the Raiders' runs.
Montclair State responded quickly, using a big four-run third inning to swing momentum and take control of the game. Despite matching Montclair with six hits, Rutgers-Newark struggled to capitalize in key moments, leaving five runners on base.
At the plate, Rutgers-Newark saw contributions throughout the lineup, including hits from Maddy Haack, Mariah Rimas-McManus, and Gabriela Forese.
