PROFILE OF THE WEEK (April 22, 2009)

NOTES:  Finished his 3-year career in Scarlet & Black with 1,209 assists… totaled 65 kills, 16 aces, 153 digs and 83 blocks.

SENIOR (2011):  2010-11 Rutgers-Newark Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and 2011 Men’s Volleyball Coaches Award  winner for unselfish dedication to the team… saw action in 19 matches for the 17-12 Raiders… second on the squad in assists (136) and assist average (2.96)… hit .241 (11-4-29) while totaling seven aces, 29 digs and 10 blocks… had a season-high 39 assists, two kills, two aces, a solo block, three assisted blocks and eight digs as team hit .379 in a 3-1 win over Baruch (1/30/11)… opened the season with 25 assists, three kills, two aces and two assisted blocks in a 3-0 win over D’Youville (1/29/11)… notched 24 assists, two kills, two aces, two assisted blocks and seven digs in a 3-0 win over Kean (3/5/11).

JUNIOR (2010): Reached the 1,000-assist plateau in his second season in Scarlet & Black… averaged 9.19 assists per game while starting six matches and playing in 13… totaled 294 assists, 34 digs, 17 blocks and 15 kills… had a pair of 51-assist matches… notched 51 assists with seven digs while hitting .857 (6-0-7) in a 3-2 loss to Saint Francis (1/23)… tallied 51 assists with four kills, four digs and four assisted blocks in a 3-1 loss at Princeton (2/19)… piled up 49 assists in a 3-1 loss at IPFW (1/29)… posted 47 assists, two kills, six digs and four assisted blocks in a 3-1 loss at Juniata (2/12).

SOPHOMORE (2009): Starting setter who averaged 11.46 assists per set while turning in 1.32 digs and .82 blocks… totaled 90 digs and 56 blocks while chipping in 39 kills and seven aces… had a career-high 55 assists in a 3-2 loss to Harvard (3/6/09)… had 11 matches with 40 or more assists… piled up 46 assists with a personal best 10 digs and four assisted blocks in a 3-1 loss to Sacred Heart (4/3/09)…posted 49 assists with four kills, three assisted blocks, five digs and an ace in a 3-1 win over East Stroudsburg (2/11/09)… got in on six blocks while adding 41 assists and five digs in a 3-1 loss to Loyola-Chicago (1/24/09)… notched 42 assists, four kills, two assisted blocks and an ace in a 3-0 win at NJIT (2/25/09)… had 45 assists and six assisted blocks n a 3-1 loss to Ball State (3/20/09)… recorded 46 assists, six digs, a solo block and four assisted blocks in a 3-2 loss at IPFW (3/27/09). 

HIGH SCHOOL: Played at Hof HaSharon under Coach Jacob Hershko, graduating in 2005.

CLUB: A member of the Israeli National Youth and Junior teams for six seasons, playing while completing his military service... served as team captain.

PERSONAL: Finance major at Rutgers-Newark... participation in Israel’s national program limited him to three seasons of intercollegiate athletic competition in the NCAA... the only son and second child to Abraham and Nancy Shapiro... has older sister (Maya) and younger siblings (Stephanie, Allison and Margo)... born in Holon, Israel.
