ANNVILLE, PA – Rutgers-Newark senior point guard Tim Smith had a team-high 16 points, but No. 19 Randolph-Macon posted a 76-60 win in the opening game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament on the campus of Lebanon Valley College.

Randolph-Macon 76, Rutgers-Newark 60

The Scarlet Raiders (1-1) now face Penn State-Harrisburg, an 86-71 loser to host Lebanon Valley in the nightcap, in Sunday's 1 p.m. consolation game.

Senior guard James Johnson notched 13 points and six rebounds while senior forward Phil Barnes added nine points and four rebounds against the taller Yellow Jackets. Senior forward Deshawn Singleton was limited to seven points and three rebounds while freshman guard Al-Don Muhammad came up with a game-high four steals.

Senior forward David Carlson came off the bench for a game-high 18 points for Randolph-Macon while junior forward Danny Jones recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Eric Pugh and Brandon Braxton netted a dozen points apiece for the Yellow Jackets who also got 11 points from Jordan Brown. Sophomore guard Adam Desgain added 10 rebounds, eight points, three assists and two steals.

A Johnson dunk gave the Raiders their final lead of the night at 41-39 with 16:15 left, but Randolph-Macon went on a 25-7 run over the next 11 minutes to settle the issue.

Smith had nine points and Johnson, eight, during a tight opening period when Rutgers-Newark stayed in the fray, 36-32, despite getting to the free throw line just once. Barnes dropped in a pair of free throws just 13 ticks into the contest, but the Raiders did not try another charity toss until the second half. The Yellow Jackets made just three of nine free throws in the first half, but they made 50 per cent of their field goal tries (15-30) and dominated the rebounding (23-14) to earn the slim lead at intermission.

Muhammad came up with a steal and a feed to sophomore guard Greg Moore to give the Raiders a 28-18 lead with 8:27 left in the opening half, but the Yellow Jackets answered with an 18-2 run. Desgain had three field goals during the spurt which was capped by a Pugh 3-point jumper with 43 seconds left. That gave Randolph-Macon a 36-30 lead before a driving layup by De'Vion Manning set the halftime deficit for the Raiders at four.
