Scarlet Raiders Fall To Hot-Shooting Baruch

Rutgers-Newark Women's Basketball

Jared Tactuk
NEW YORK, NY – Rutgers-Newark senior forward Courtney Vacca posted her fifth double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but Baruch sank a dozen 3-point jumpers on its way to a 77-47 non-conference victory.

Baruch 77, Rutgers-Newark 47

Junior guard Martyna Ruminska netted a team-high 18 points, adding seven rebounds, two steals and an assist while sophomore guard Jared Tactuk had team highs of four assists and four steals to go along with eight points and three rebounds.

Baruch connected on nine of 12 shots from 3-point range in the opening half and forced 15 turnovers to build a commanding lead. Junior guard Lorin Clarke made three of five treys while scoring 11 of her 20 points and senior forward Christina Kelly went two for two from downtown to collect 10 of her 12 points before the break.

A Clarke three gave Baruch a 32-point lead before Ruminska dropped in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make the score 46-17.

Baruch (5-1) bounced back from its first loss of the year – at No. 2 ranked Amherst on Saturday – while the depleted Raiders (5-5) fell for the fourth time in their last six outings. Rutgers-Newark dressed just seven players for the second consecutive game.

The Bearcats got field goals from each of their starters, including two by senior forward Kalea Davis, to put the Raiders in a 15-2 hole. Junior point guard Monique Salmon, Kelly and Clarke each knocked down 3-point jumpers during the surge which ended with Clarke's trey just 4:50 into the contest. Tactuk nailed a shot from beyond the arc to make it 15-5 with 15:19 left in the period, but that was as close as Rutgers-Newark would get.

Salmon dished out 10 assists while Davis contributed 10 points and nine rebounds to the Bearcat cause. Kelly notched a game-high five steals while Clarke made half of Baruch's 3-point field goals.

Rutgers-Newark visits York College in Jamaica, Queens, on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader. The women tip off at 6 p.m. with the men set to begin play at 8 o'clock.
