Johnson, Smith Lead Raider Win Over SUNY Cobleskill

NEWARK, NJ – Senior guards James Johnson and Tim Smith combined to make nine of 13 shots from 3-point range as Rutgers-Newark stopped SUNY Cobleskill, 81-58, in The Golden Dome in a non-conference game.

Johnson paced the Scarlet Raiders with 21 points, hitting five of nine tries from beyond the arc, and added four assists and two steals. Smith made all four of his shots from long range and finished with 15 points, seven assists and two steals as the Raiders (13-5) guaranteed their sixth straight winning regular season. 

Senior forwards Phil Barnes and Deshawn Singleton scored a dozen points apiece with Barnes grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and Singleton collecting seven. 

Rookie guard Al-Don Muhammad rang up a career-high and team individual season high total of nine assists and added two steals for the Raiders who won for the second straight time.  Sophomore guard Greg Moore came off the bench to drop in two 3-pointers as the Raiders amassed a dozen treys on 27 attempts while shooting 50% from the floor overall.

Junior swingman Damon Franklin notched game-highs of 28 points and 13 rebounds while contributing three steals, two assists and a block for the Fighting Tigers (3-10). Freshman guard Haneef Scott hit five of eight shots from the floor and all three of his free throws to scored 14 for SUNY Cobleskill. 

Rutgers-Newark travels to Kean on Saturday for a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader.  The Raider and Cougar women tip off at 1 p.m. with the men's game set to begin at 3 o'clock in Union.
