Scarlet Raiders Can't Find The Range At Kean

Rutgers-Newark Men's Basketball

Deshawn Singleton
UNION, NJ – Rutgers-Newark senior forward Deshawn Singleton erupted for 19 points and eight rebounds, but Kean upset the cold-shooting Scarlet Raiders, 70-57, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in the Harwood Arena.

Kean 70, Rutgers-Newark 57

The Raiders (13-6, NJAC 3-4) suffered through a nightmarish 0-for-22 afternoon from 3-point range which offset a fine 17-for-18 effort from the free throw line in suffering their third straight conference loss. The Cougars (7-11, NJAC 4-4) also failed to make a shot from beyond the arc, missing five attempts.

Junior guard Micheal DeShields and senior guard De'Vion Manning netted eight points apiece for the Raiders while Singleton was credited with the only assist of the game for Rutgers-Newark in a contest full of statistical anomalies.

Guards Greg Moore and James Johnson, two of the best 3-point shooters in the NJAC, each went 0-for-7 from long range as the Raiders shot just 31.7% from the floor overall. Kean made 46.8% of their field goal tries.

Reserve center Jonathan Jones came off the bench to lead the Cougars with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Guard Vinne Darpino added 15 points as the Kean put four players in double figures.

Playing from behind after trailing 24-19 at the half, Rutgers-Newark launched 18 3-point shots in the final 20 minutes with none finding the net. That helped the Cougars control the boards, 44-32.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Ramapo in an NJAC doubleheader on Wednesday in The Golden Dome. The women tip off at 6 p.m. with the men's game set for 8 o'clock.
