Scarlet Raiders Down Goucher For Holiday Classic Title

Rutgers-Newark Men's Basketball

Deshawn Singleton
ARLINGTON, VA – Sophomore reserve guard Greg Moore and tournament MVP Deshawn Singleton, who combined for 27 points, ignited a 53-point first half explosion as the Scarlet Raiders raced past Goucher, 86-57, to win the Marymount Holiday Classic in the Verizon Sports Arena.

Rutgers-Newark 86, Goucher 57

Five Raiders reached double figures in points with senior forward Phil Barnes hitting seven of 10 shots from the floor on his way to 17 points. Barnes joined Singleton on the all-tournament team after hitting 14 of 18 field goals (77.8%) in the two Raider wins.

Excluding the home-based John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic, the in-season tournament title was the first for Rutgers-Newark since the Raiders opened the 1996-97 season by winning the Greenville Classic at Theil College.

Senior forward Singleton tallied 15 points while Moore scored all 12 of his points in the opening period. Senior guards James Johnson and Tim Smith notched 13 point apiece as Rutgers-Newark shot over 50% from the field for the sixth straight game.

Moore knocked down four of six 3-point jumpers and Singleton worked inside for a dozen points as Rutgers-Newark constructed a decisive 53-28 halftime lead by connecting on a sizzling 54.8% (17-31) of its field goals. It was the most points scored by the Raiders in the first half this season, topping a pair of 51-point outbursts in wins over Penn State-Harrisburg and John Jay.

Smith finished with a team-high six rebounds and three steals while tying Singleton for the game-high in assists with four.

The Gophers (2-8), who snapped a 5-game losing streak with a 59-58 win over host Marymount on Saturday, were never in the contest as Rutgers-Newark (9-3) ran its victory string to five contests. A jumper by freshman reserve guard Al-Don Muhammad gave the Raiders their biggest lead at 79-43 lead with 8:15 left.

Sophomore forward Kyle Gladden paced Goucher with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds while sophomore guard Shane Yambor added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Rutgers-Newark travels to New Jersey City University on Wednesday for a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Raider and Gothic Knight women tip off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 o'clock in the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center.
