JERSEY CITY, NJ – Senior forward Deshawn Singleton scored a game-high 22 points and blocked three shots to help Rutgers-Newark stop New Jersey City, 77-61, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball game in the Moore Athletic and Fitness Center.

Rutgers-Newark 77, New Jersey City 61

Singleton notched 15 points and sophomore guard Greg Moore came off the bench to hit four of seven 3-point attempts as the Scarlet Raiders (10-3, NJAC 2-1) constructed a 40-23 halftime lead over the Gothic Knights (5-5, NJAC 1-1). Moore made five of nine treys on the evening, finishing with 16 points and two steals.

The Raiders ran their win streak to six games but failed to shoot over 50% from the floor for the first time in eight outings. Rutgers-Newark made 46.9% of its field goals in a game marred by 60 personal fouls. Singleton and junior guard Micheal DeShields fouled out for Rutgers-Newark. The Raiders made 25 of 40 free throws while NJCU knocked down 25 of 44.

Senior forward Phil Barnes just missed a double-double by scoring 11 points and collaring a team-high nine rebounds while senior guard James Johnson netted 13 points and added two assists. Freshman guard Al-Don Muhammad came off the bench to dish out a game-high four assists, score six points and grab four rebounds.

Barnes hit a layup in the opening minute of the second half to give the Raiders their biggest lead of the night at 42-23, and the Gothic Knights could get no closer than a dozen points down the stretch.

Forward Walik Albright was NJCU's only double-digit scorer with 13 points as the Gothic Knights were held to 28.8% field goal accuracy and managed to hit just two of 17 shots from beyond the arc. Albright also added five rebounds and two assists. Forward Tom McDermott and reserve forward Isaiah Johnson each hauled down 10 rebounds with Johnson adding nine points.

New Jersey City pounded the offensive glass for 23 rebounds to forge an overall 46-35 edge in rebounding, but the Raiders knocked down six more field goals, including four more from 3-point range, to spell the difference.
