Raiders Post Wins Over Green Mountain, Brooklyn

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark rolled to a pair of non-conference wins over Green Mountain and Brooklyn College in a tri-match in The Golden Dome.

In the opener, sophomore middle hitter Rachel Witt led a balanced Rutgers-Newark attack as the Scarlet Raiders swept past Green Mountain, 25-19, 25-10, 25-20.

Witt hit a sizzling .733 with 11 kills and no errors in just 15 swings while adding an ace and a solo block for 13.0 points. Sophomore right side Stephanie Touzan added seven kills, a match-high five aces, eight digs and an assisted block to pile up 12.5 points while freshman outside hitter Ula Nieznalska posted eight kills, two aces and eight digs.

Senior libero Rose Anna Beljour had four aces as Rutgers-Newark rang up 13 in the contest. Beljour added eight digs while junior setter Gabi Mangieri was credited with 27 assists, and ace and four digs.

Brooklyn College (11-7) powered past Green Mountain (6-14), 25-10, 25-13, 25-23 in the second match behind seven kills apiece by freshman outside hitter Maritza Morency and junior right side Colette Dragon. The Bulldogs posted 15 aces led by freshman setter Amanda Fiore and sophomore serving specialist Lisenia Rodriguez who registered five apiece.

In the nightcap, Touzan had seven aces, nine kills, a solo block, an assisted block and seven digs to help the Raiders earn a 28-26, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19 win over Brooklyn.

Witt had a match-high 10 kills, hitting .421 (10 kills, 2 errors, 19 attacks) while adding six digs, a solo block and an assisted block for 11.5 points. Mangieri had 30 assists and seven digs while junior outside hitter Toni Moppert posted nine kills and a match-high tying 18 digs. Nieznalska rang up seven kills, two aces and 11 digs while Beljour added 17 digs, an ace and a kill.

Dragon and Morency notched nine kills apiece for the Bulldogs who got 33 assists, four kills, two aces and 16 digs from Fiore. Senior libero Noelle Benson posted 18 digs for Brooklyn.

The Raiders had to climb out of a 14-3 hole and fight off three set points before catching the Bulldogs at 24-24 on an attack error. The teams traded the lead until freshman middle blocker Michelle Jimenez knotted the score at 26-26. A Touzan kill set up a frame-ending attack error by Morency.

Rutgers-Newark (8-14, NJAC 1-6) hosts Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in The Golden Dome.
