Scarlet Raiders Find The Range Against Cardinals

Rutgers-Newark Men's Soccer

Jason Chung
NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark snapped out of the offensive doldrums with a 5-1 win over York (NY) College in a non-conference match on Alumni Field.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

Freshman forward Josh Alvarez notched his fourth and fifth goals of the year as the Scarlet Raiders (9-6-1) posted their highest scoring total since an 8-0 romp over Purchase College on September 9. The win also guaranteed Rutgers-Newark at least a .500 finish to the regular season.

Alvarez's first goal leveled the score in the 27th minute when he put away a long lead aerial pass from junior midfielder Tom King. The rookie added another marker in the 78th minute after senior forward Robert Campos completed a long breakaway run on the right side with a cross to Alvarez in the middle. Alvarez finished with a low shot just under the goalkeeper.

Freshman defender Jason Chung notched the game winner for his first career goal at 40:24. Junior midfielder Ronald Quiroz went up in the middle to head a corner kick from the right side by junior forward Richie Villamar to the left side of the box. Chung pounded the ball off the keeper just inside the left post for the decisive goal.

Rookie midfielder Harrison Wagner followed with his first career goal in the 57th minute by executing a perfect give-and-go with sophomore defender Michael Kwiecinski to get a clear shot from the right side.

Freshman Daniel Naranjo capped the scoring with just 28 ticks left by completing a long breakaway run down the left side on a through pass by junior midfielder Chirayu Rana.

But the Cardinals (5-8-2) drew first blood when freshman midfielder Khadim Kebe headed in a beautiful restart serve by sophomore defender Brian Broadbelt in the 12th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Zielyk made three saves to run his season record to 5-1-0.

Rutgers-Newark dominated play, getting off 27 shots to the Cardinals' 12 and ruling corner kicks, 17-2.

The Raiders have no time to enjoy the win because they host Stevens (9-0-3) – a team which has yielded just one goal this season – Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Alumni Field.
