Jervis Witherspoon
NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark stunned previously unbeaten and No. 3 nationally-ranked Stevens on goals by Jervis Witherspoon and Robert Campos in a 2-0 non-conference win on Alumni Field.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Scarlet Raiders (10-6-1) doubled the number of goal allowed by the Ducks (9-1-3) and their outstanding senior goalkeeper Zach Carr this season while senior Matt Zielyk and sophomore Jonathan Frances played a half each to share the shutout. Each Raider goalkeeper made three saves with Zielyk (6-1-0) getting credit for the victory.

Witherspoon scored what proved to be the game winner in the 44th minute, collecting the ball against pressure from about 30 yards out on the left side. He dribbled toward the middle and rifled a hard shot past Carr from about 20 yards out to give Rutgers-Newark an edge that it would never relinquish.

In the 59th minute, junior defender Mike Trenard raced down the left side with the ball and cut back toward the goal near the endline. He sent a cross into the middle of the six-yard box where Campos ran upon the pass for the insurance goal.

In a well-played battle, those two plays spelled the difference as Zielyk and Frances each made a spectacular stop to thwart a potent Duck attack. Freshman defender Robert Rosario stood out in a tremendous team effort the Scarlet Raiders.

Stevens dominated corner kicks, 8-2, but the overall shot totals were Stevens 13, Rutgers-Newark 12.

The victory gave the Raiders 10 wins or more in each of the last three seasons which is unprecedented in the program's history and guaranteed head coach Kevin East's squad its third straight winning season.

Rutgers-Newark visits William Paterson on Saturday for a 1 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference match before squaring off against Richard Stockton in the final regular season contest on Wednesday night.
