NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark senior right-hander
Tom Abair carried a shutout into the eighth inning, but a 14-hit Scarlet Raider assault made him a certain winner in a 17-3 decision over John Jay College in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Abair (2-1) yielded three unearned runs in the eighth before giving way to a shutout ninth inning stint by senior
Kevin Apel. Abair struck out seven, walked one and allowed seven singles to post the victory.

Matt Lingo had a 2-run double in the 5-run fourth and a 2-RBI triple in the 6-run fifth for Raiders. Sophomore catcher
Anthony Palladino hammered a 2-run homer to cap the fifth inning outburst and added an RBI single in the fourth to also finish that rally. Senior third baseman
Joe Furnaguera roped an RBI triple to right centerfield in the third and chipped in an RBI single in the fifth.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Scranton on Saturday at noon in a doubleheader before taking on Stevens on Sunday at noon. All games will be played in Riverfront Stadium.
