NEWARK, N.J. – Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders used a dominant middle-inning outburst to power past John Jay, 16-8, on Tuesday afternoon.
After being held scoreless through the first three innings, Rutgers-Newark broke through in the fourth and quickly seized control. The Scarlet Raiders added two runs in the fifth before erupting for eight runs in the sixth inning, blowing the game open. They continued to tack on with two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to secure the win.
The Scarlet Raiders offense was firing on all cylinders, finishing with 16 hits on the day. Daniel Fedorco led the way with a standout performance, tallying four hits, three runs scored, and three RBI. Matthew Torreto, Michael Weinbel, Trevor Wallace, Joseph Bernardo, and Jonathan Jerez each recorded two hits, showcasing the depth of Rutgers-Newark's lineup.
On the mound, Chase Ostrowski led the way with a strong outing, tossing three shutout innings while striking out two batters to set the tone for the Scarlet Raiders.
John Jay finished with eight runs on eight hits, highlighted by a four-run eighth inning, but the Scarlet Raiders' explosive sixth inning proved to be the difference.
Rutgers-Newark will be back in action Thursday as they host Muhlenberg College.
