Angela Riscinti
NEWARK, NJ – Freshman Angela Riscinti kept Rutgers-Newark close in both games, but No. 8 College of New Jersey escaped Alumni Field with a 1-0 and 4-3 New Jersey Athletic Confernce sweep.

TCNJ 1, Rutgers-Newark 1
TCNJ 4, Rutgers-Newark 3 (8 inn.)

Riscinti hurled a 3-hitter in the opener, but lost to Lion ace Ashley Minervini who posted a 1-hit shutout with nine strikeouts. Riscinti allowed a lead-off triple to TCNJ leftfielder Crystal Lee which led to the only run of the game as Lion head coach Sally Miller claimed her 400th career victory.

A seventh-inning infield single by freshman first baseman Monica Bagan, which loaded the bases with one out, was Rutgers-Newark's only hit. But on the play, second baseman Emily Ibarra who was on board after getting hit by a pitch, was gunned out at the plate while trying to score from second after an errant throw went into centerfield. That gave the Lions two outs and Minervini struck out the final batter to preserve the win.

In the second game, freshman rightfielder Nicole Odell ripped a bases-loaded, 2-out triple which knotted the score at 3-3 and sent the game into an extra inning.

Riscinti pitched a 6-hitter with four strikeouts against a walk, but she lost to TCNJ's Lauren Fitzsimmons who notched a 3-hitter with a dozen strikeouts and two walks.

TCNJ third baseman Kelly Hommen lined out to leftfield in the bottom of the eighth to plate Lee from third to end the contest.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Montclair State on Alumni Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in another NJAC twinbill.
