MAHWAH, NJ – Rutgers-Newark fell to Ramapo, 7-0 and 11-1, in a New Jersey Athletic
Conference doubleheader as Roadrunner pitching carried the day.
Ramapo 7, Rutgers-Newark 0
Ramapo 11, Rutgers-Newark 1
Junior pitcher Deanna Giordano (8-6) and Lyndsay Buehler (10-3) limited the Scarlet Raiders (11-21, NJAC 1-11) to 11 hits and one run for Ramapo (20-12, NJAC 9-3).
In game one, the Raiders loaded the bases against Giordano in the second inning on walks to catcher
Monica Liotto, first baseman
Monica Bagan and leftfielder
Nicole Odell. But Giordano got a strikeout and an infield grounder to escape the jam with yielding a run.
Ramapo used five walks, two hits and a pair of sacrifice flies to push across six runs in the third against freshman pitcher
Angela Riscinti (8-10). Riscinti gave up nine hits and eight walks while striking out three in six innings.
In the nightcap, Rutgers-Newark got on the board in the fifth on a single by losing pitcher
Samantha Veneziano (3-11), a sacrifice bunt by junior centerfielder
Jessica Zelaya, a bunt single by Odell and an RBI single through the middle of the infield by catcher
Amber Affholter.
But, that was all the damage the Raiders could do against Buehler who scattered seven hits while striking out 10 and walking two in seven full innings.
Affholter went two for four, but she was the only Rutgers-Newark player with more than one hit. Zelaya, Liotto and Bagan had the other Raider hits.
The Roadrunners collected 17 hits against Veneziano.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Rowan at 1 p.m. on Saturday in an NJAC doubleheader on Alumni Field.
