No. 20 Rowan Shuts Out Scarlet Raiders

Rutgers-Newark Softball

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark could muster only four hits as No. 20 nationally-ranked Rowan powered its way to a 12-0 and 7-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep on Alumni Field.

In the opener, junior centerfielder Jessica Zelaya singled to lead off the Scarlet Raider first inning, but that would be the last hit that the Profs' Jamie Minix would allow as she struck out nine and walked no one in the five-inning decision. Zelaya's hit was the only thing between Minix and an abbreviated perfect game.

Rowan erupted for eight runs in the first inning to make it an easy win for Minix.

In the nightcap, freshman third baseman Monica Liotto and rookie rightfielder Quiana Gleaves had singles and senior catcher Amber Affholter ripped a seventh-inning double, but those were the only hits against Michelle Black and Erika Knorr who shared the Rowan shutout.

Rowan shortstop Ashley Minch started a bizarre triple play in the fourth inning by fielding short hop shot off the bat of Affholter. Zelaya led off the inning with a walk before Liotto singled through the middle to put runners on first and second. Minch fielded Affholter's low liner and threw to first for the force out, but the runners, uncertain of whether it was a catch or a ground ball, retreated to their bases. Both runners walked off the field before the confusion was cleared up – and both were ruled out on the play.

Rowan scored six runs over its final three innings at the plate to run its record to 25-8 overall and 11-3 in the NJAC. The Raiders (11-23, NJAC 1-13) were eliminated from the race for one of six conference championship tournament berths by the losses.

Rutgers-Newark visits William Paterson for an NJAC twinbill on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
