Rutgers-Newark Men's Basketball

Greg Moore
CAMDEN, NJ – Junior guard Greg Moore knocked down four of six 3-point shots in the second half as Rutgers-Newark clawed out a 61-55 win over Rutgers-Camden in New Jersey Athletic Conference play.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

Moore scored all of his game-high 16 points in the second half, making all four of his free throw attempts, as the Scarlet Raiders (13-2, NJAC 3-1) held off the Scarlet Raptors (2-9, NJAC 1-3). Moore scored the Raiders' final five points in the final minute to provide some breathing room. Moore's fourth trey of the game gave Rutgers-Newark a 59-53 lead with just 22 seconds left. He then grabbed a defensive rebound and was fouled with 14 ticks remaining to set up a pair of free throws which finally iced the decision.

Moore had a 3-point jumper and a pair of free throws during a crucial 10-2 run which staked Rutgers-Newark to a 44-35 lead with 11:19 remaining. Sophomore guard Al'Don Muhammad, who finished with a dozen points, four assists, three steals and three rebounds, capped the run with a trey.

The Raptors trimmed the Raider lead to three three times during the final six minutes, but Rutgers-Newark never gave up the lead.

In the opening half, junior forward Jeremiah Rivers hit three jumpers in the final minutes to rally the Raiders from a 25-16 deficit to trail the Raptors by a point at 25-24 at the break. A conventional 3-point play by senior forward Alex Rislin gave Rutgers-Camden their largest lead of the game at nine points before Rivers, who finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot, ignited the 8-0 outburst which also included a jumper by Muhammad.

Junior guard Pedro Burgos netted a dozen points for the Raiders while sophomore forward Mark Moorman added six points and a team-high seven rebounds. Rutgers-Newark starters scored all but five of the team's points.

Rislin paced Rutgers-Camden with 13 points while senior guard Eric Goode came off the bench for 11 points on four of five shooting from the floor in just 16 minutes of play. Senior forward Kevin Brown hauled down a game-high eight rebounds to give the Raptors a 33-31 edge on the boards. Reserves scored 32 of Rutgers-Camden's points.

Rutgers-Newark's second lowest point output of the season (coming on the heels of a 77-60 loss at William Paterson) was offset by its second lowest points allowed total of the season.  The Raiders stopped York NY, 93-50, on December 10.

The Raiders had season lows of eight free throws made in just 11 attempts as neither team got into foul trouble. Rutgers-Newark was whistled for just 13 personals -- their second lowest total of the season -- while the Raptors drew a dozen fouls which was the fewest by a Raider opponent in 2010-11.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Ramapo College in an NJAC twinbill on Wednesday. The women's teams tip off at 6 p.m. in The Golden Dome with the men's game to follow at 8 o'clock.
