NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark senior forward
Liana Abreu netted a pair of second-half goals, but Rutgers-Camden used three first-half scores to post a 3-2 New Jersey Athletic Conference win on rain swept Alumni Field.
BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY
Abreu netted goals 19 and 20 on the season to leave her just two short of the R-N single season record for markers with two matches left on the regular season slate. She hammered a shot from 35 yards out on the left side into the right side of the net in the 53rd minute before heading in a chip pass by sophomore midfielder
Tia Miller following a corner kick in the 87th minute to bring some suspense to the finish.
The Scarlet Raiders (4-13-0, NJAC 0-6-0) lost their third straight as the Scarlet Raptors (1-10-2, NJAC 1-4-1) notched their first victory of the season.
Abreu had as many shots as the Raptor team, putting four of her 10 shots on goal, but Rutgers-Camden sophomore goalkeeper Leighanna Milby made six saves to make the difference. The Raiders took 20 shots and edged the Raptors in corner kicks, 5-4.
Freshman goalkeeper
Victoria Nunez got the loss, giving up the three first-half goals against two saves before junior
Camelia Valentin faced only two shots in the second period.
Freshman midfielder Michelle Barbone assisted freshman forward Katie Angelosante on a breakaway opening goal in the 19th minute before scoring herself in the 39th minute by lifting a soft shot from 40 yards out which snuck under the crossbar.
Senior forward Samantha Sharp scored what proved to be the game winner at 44:04 when she drew Nunez out of the goal on the end of a breakaway run and put a shot under the diving goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead.
Rutgers-Newark visits William Paterson on Saturday for a noon NJAC match.
