NEWARK, NJ – Senior forward
Liana Abreu scored twice to rally Rutgers-Newark to a 2-1 win over FDU-Florham on Alumni Field.
BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY
Abreu scored her 17th and 18th goals of the season five minutes apart in the opening period to offset an earlier Devils' goal, then the Scarlet Raiders (4-10-0) held on for the win. FDU-Florham, which had won four of its last five matches slipped to 5-8-0.
Freshman goalkeeper
Victoria Nunez made three saves for her first career win between the posts as the Raiders outshot the visitors, 18-14, while building a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Senior midfielder Kim Campfield put away a loose ball in front of the goal following a corner kick from the left side by sophomore forward Claire Donohue to give the Devils the lead in the 28th minute.
Abreu knotted the score by heading in a goal from the left side of the box on a perfect corner kick from the right side by sophomore defender
Vanessa Rivera in the 34th minute. Five minutes later, Abreu fired a shot from the right corner of the 18 across the goal inside the left post for the game winner.
FDU-Florham senior goalkeeper Lauren Albrecht made seven saves to keep the Devils close and each team had chances to score in the second period.
Abreu's 18 goals are the second most in a season in the 12-year history of women's soccer at Rutgers-Newark. Her 38 points tie her with Erin Finn (2000) for the second most points in a single season. Already the career leader in goals and assists at R-N, Abreu upped her 4-year points total to 112 while pushing her goals tally to 48.
Rutgers-Newark now has a full week to prepare for its New Jersey Athletic Conference contest at New Jersey City on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
