Scarlet Raiders Turn Back CCNY's Second-Half Rally, 62-52

NEW YORK – Rutgers-Newark senior guard Greg Moore netted five of his 13 points during a decisive second-half spurt as the Scarlet Raiders fended off CCNY for a 62-52 win in Nat Holman Gym.

Moore, who tied senior swingman Jeremiah Rivers for team scoring honors, drained a 3-point jumper to cap a 15-4 run which staked the Raiders (2-2) to a 58-47 lead with 4:49 left after the Beavers (1-2) had erased a 10-point deficit in the second half.

Rivers finished with eight rebounds and four assists while Moore tallied eight second-half points with a pair of treys as Rutgers-Newark won its second straight.

Junior forward Corey Boland had 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Raiders while senior guard Pedro Burgos chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.  Junior center Hussein Abdelmaksoud came off the bench for eight points, five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots while junior guard Al'Don Muhammad was limited to four points and four assists.

Junior guard Israel Vickers led CCNY with 13 points and four assists while freshman center Brandon Reeves had 10 points and nine rebounds.  Junior forward Derell Williams netted 11 points and added seven rebounds.

Boland had six points and Burgos knocked down two jumpers including a trey as the Raiders jumped out to a 13-4 lead during the opening seven minutes.  Rutgers-Newark led by a dozen seven times in the period before taking a 36-27 lead into the break.

A Boland free throw 29 seconds into the second half gave the Raiders a double-digit lead before the Beavers surged behind six points by guard Hector Hernandez and four by Reeves.  Reeves hit a free throw with 1:17 left to give CCNY its only lead of the half at 41-40.

Moore followed with a 3-pointer before Vickers tied the score for the final time at 43-43 with 9:43 left.  A Muhammad layup gave the Raiders the lead for good with 9:11 remaining and ignited the decisive rally.

Rutgers-Newark starts New Jersey Athletic Conference play after the Thanksgiving break, hosting Montclair State in a doubleheader on November 30 in The Golden Dome Arena.  The women tip off at 6 p.m. with the men following at 8 o'clock.
