Scarlet Raiders Suffer Cold Night Against No. 24 William Paterson

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark suffered through a cold night from the field to fall to nationally-ranked William Paterson, 66-41, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in The Golden Dome.

Senior forward Jaleesa Coleman was the only Scarlet Raider in double figures with 14 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots as Rutgers-Newark connected on just 21.3% (15-65) of its field goals. The Raiders made five of 35 shots from beyond the arc as they played catch-up for most of the night. Their 41 points matched their lowest game output of the season.

Junior guard Brittany Smith notched seven points, a team-high seven rebounds and three assists for the Raiders.

Pioneer junior guard BriAnna Lucas scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to stake the Pioneers (19-3, NJAC 8-2) to a 31-22 lead. When junior forward April Smith went to the bench with her third foul with a slim 11-9 lead and 9:25 left in the opening period, WPU went out to the perimeter where Lucas gunned in three of her five treys to key a decisive 14-6 run. She also knocked down a jumper with just 16 ticks left before intermission.

Smith and sophomore forward Tatiana Javis each had a double-double. Smith finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Javis hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds and added a dozen points.

Rutgers-Newark visits Ramapo on Wednesday for an NJAC twinbill. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30.
