Scarlet Raiders' Offense Stalled by Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, NJ – Rutgers-Newark was stopped by Montclair State pitching in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader in the MSU Softball Stadium. Game scores were 8-0 and 8-0 as the league-leading Red Hawks (20-4, NJAC 8-0) limited the Scarlet Raiders (7-17, NJAC 2-6) to two hits in each of the five inning games.

IN GAME ONE, freshman second baseman Stacey Jacovinich singled in the fourth and rookie catcher AJ Affholter dropped down a bunt single in the fifth for the only hits against freshman Alex Hill (11-2) who struck out eight and walked just one to face just three beyond the minimum in the five-inning game.

Raider sophomore pitcher Angela Riscinti (4-7) kept things close until the fourth inning when the Red Hawks erupted for six runs on seven hits. Hill led off the inning with a solo home run while freshman third baseman Dana Amato's three-run homer was the big blow.

IN GAME TWO, sophomore leftfielder Nicole Odell doubled down the leftfield line to lead off the third and sophomore designated player Monica Bagan singled through the middle of the infield in the fourth for the only hits against sophomore Jamie Miller.

Raider freshman Liane Drastal (3-5) took the loss, giving up seven runs on 11 hits during the first three innings before giving way to classmate Brianna Alicchio to finish the day.

MSU scored five runs on six hits in the top of the first to take early control of the nightcap. Freshman catcher Liz Russo went three for four with a pair of RBIs to pace the Red Hawks' 16-hit attack.

Rutgers-Newark hosts William Paterson at 11 a.m. on Saturday in another NJAC twinbill.
