Rowan Downs Scarlet Raiders To Keep Share Of NJAC Lead

GLASSBORO, NJ – Rutgers-Newark fell 4-0 to a powerful Rowan team in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match on the Rowan Soccer Field.

Rutgers-Newark's only shots were both on goal late in the contest with freshman forward Cristina Estremera forcing a save in the 83rd minute and junior midfielder Renae McEvoy firing another shot stopped by Prof backup goalkeeper Katina Anthony.

Rowan scored three times in less than two minutes in the opening 13 minutes to break open the match.  Senior midfielder Michele Ercolano sent crossing passes from the right side to the edge of the box for goals by senior midfielder Morgan Muracco at 10:34 and sophomore forward Sherry Oller at 11:44 to chase starting sophomore goalkeeper Victoria Nunez who was in goal replacing injured freshman Kelsey Benoit.

Freshman midfielder Mercedes Lois moved into the goal following the second tally but a through pass by Oller started a breakaway run by Erica Suhl which ended the a goal into the right side of the net at 12:30 to cap the spurt.  Lois made seven saves against two goals allowed while facing 16 shots.

Junior defender Miranda Donnian headed in a corner kick from the Oller in the 55th minute to end the scoring as the Profs rode a 21-2 advantage in shots to the victory.

Rowan senior goalkeeper Maria Dorris did not face shot in her 77 minutes to get the victory.

Rutgers-Newark fell to 3-12-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the NJAC while the Profs (10-2-0, NJAC 6-1-0) won their fifth straight match overall while registering their fourth consecutive win the 10-team league.  The Profs maintained a share of the NJAC lead with Montclair State which downed New Jersey City, 5-2, this afternoon.

Rutgers-Newark steps out of the league on Monday, hosting Medgar Evers at 7:30 p.m. on Alumni Field before travelling to Vassar on Wednesday afternoon at 4.

The Raiders host William Paterson in NJAY play on October 20 at 7:30 p.m. when Margeaux Hedley will be honored on Senior Night.
