Bagan's Triple Helps Scarlet Raiders Split In Florida

CLERMONT, FL – Rutgers-Newark junior first baseman Monica Bagan tripled home the winning run with two out in the bottom of the seventh in a 4-3 win over Macalester as the Scarlet Raiders split a pair of games at the NTC Spring Games.  The Raiders fell to Bethany College, 5-1, in the second game.

Bagan's walk-off triple gave the Raiders the win after the Scots (5-3) tied the game on an RBI double by Cleo Nagy in the top of the frame.

Sophomore catcher AJ Affholter drove a 2-run double to center field in the fourth to tie the score at 2-2.

The Raiders went up 3-2 in the fifth when freshman second baseman Kelsey Lucas double to left center field and scored on a single to left by junior third baseman Monica Liotto.  Lucas walked to lead off the seventh and scored the winning run.

Sophomore pitcher Brianna Alicchio scattered eight hits, struck out one and walked three before leaving the circle with one out and runners on first and second in the seventh.  Sophomore Liane Drastal coaxed back-to-back fielder's choice ground balls to end the threat and get the win.

All of the Scots' runs were unearned.  The game started off with back-to-back infield errors by the Raiders in the first with both runners scoring.  The tying run in the seventh reach on an infielder error.

Lucas, Liotto and junior leftfielder Nicole Odell had two hits apiece.

In the second game, Bagan doubled through the middle of the infield to bring home freshman shortstop Victoria Sovak in the fifth inning for the Raiders' only run against Kiersten Conwell (2-2) who allowed just five hits.   Sovak had two of those hits.

Rutgers-Newark (3-4) wraps up their Florida trip on Thursday, facing Wesleyan University at 9 a.m. and Lesley College at 11 at the Legends Way Ballfields.
