VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Freshman shortstop
Victoria Sovak went four for four to pace a 9-hit attack as Rutgers-Newark downed Washington College to split a pair of games at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Bash. The Scarlet Raiders (1-1) fell, 12-1, to Eastern Mennonite in their season opener earlier in the afternoon.
In the win over Washington College, junior third baseman
Monica Liotto went two for three, scored three times and drove in a run for Rutgers-Newark which took advantage of seven Shoremen (0-1) errors in the win.
Sophomore lefty
Brianna Alicchio (1-0) got the win by giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four.
Sophomore catcher
AJ Affholter capped a 3-run fourth inning with an RBI infield grounder the drove in another run with a single through the middle of the infield in a sixth to push the Raider lead to 7-3.
Sovak singled, stole second, moved to third on an infield error off the bat of freshman second baseman
Kelsey Lucas, then scored when Lucas was thrown out while trying to steal second. Sovak singled home a run in the second. She also dropped down a bunt single to start the fourth inning rally.
Junior second baseman Shaelan Nottingham hammered a 2-run home run for the Shoremen in the second inning to knot the score at 2-2 while he sister, catcher Kylie Nottingham doubled twice and scored three times. Freshman rightfielder Christine Anderson went two for four for Washington.
In the opening loss to Eastern Mennonite, Sovak produced the Raiders' lone run with a solo home run in the third inning, but freshman pitcher Jordan Aylor handcuffed the Rutgers-Newark on four hits in the six-inning decision.

Monica Bagan doubled in the third and Lucas rapped a single in the first for the Raider hits. Aylor struck four and walked five while losing pitcher
Liane Drastal (0-1) gave up 11 hits and three walks while striking out five in five innings of work.
Weather permitting, Rutgers-Newark will play Hood College at 10 a.m. and Lynchburg College at noon on Saturday.
