Scarlet Raiders Split Doubleheader With FDU-Florham

NEWARK, NJ – Junior Monica Bagan and freshman Victoria Sovak each went three for four to lead a 12-hit attack as Rutgers-Newark downed FDU-Florham, 8-2, in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split with FDU-Florham on Alumni Field.  The Devils won the opener 12-6.

Bagan had a 2-out, 2-run triple and scored on a single by sophomore catcher AJ Affholter as the Scarlet Raiders (9-7) got all of the runs that they would need in the first inning of game two.  She added a 2-run single to cap another 3-run outburst in the fourth inning.

Sovak hit a towering solo home run to left in the sixth inning to end the scoring.

Sophomore Liane Drastal (4-6) scattered eight hits while striking out one and walking one to get the Raider win.

FDU sophomore catcher Sarah Lima hammered a solo home run to left in the fifth inning after a 2-out RBI single by senior second baseman Brianne Faynor brought in an unearned run to put the Devils on the board in the fourth.

Junior third baseman Monica Liotto and sophomore first baseman Gabby Spinella had two hits apiece for Rutgers-Newark while sophomore leftfielder Brittni Wurst was the only FDU player with two hits.

IN THE OPENER, senior centerfielder Ronica Sorice had five infield singles – including two on bunts – as FDU piled up 19 hits.  Sorice scored four times.

Senior third baseman Megan Golembiewski drove in five runs with singles in the first, fifth and seventh innings, a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a booted ground ball in the second.  Lima went three for five with a double and three RBIs.

Senior pitcher Megan McInaw (4-2) scattered 10 hits while striking out eight without giving up a walk to get the win.

Sophomore shortstop Tiara Santi went three for three with RBI singles in the second and fourth to pace the Raiders.  Spinella had a double, a single and scored twice for Rutgers-Newark while Sovak tripled and scored in the seventh.

Rutgers-Newark opens its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule against The College of New Jersey in a 1 o'clock doubleheader on Alumni Field on Saturday.
