NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark had a penalty kick blocked and out-shot Kean 9-0 in the final minutes in a heart-breaking 2-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference loss on Alumni Field.

Sophomore forward Erickson Simeon had a hand in both Kean goals a minute and 15 seconds apart midway the second half to lift Kean into the lead – then the Cougars held on for dear life.

Daniel Naranjo went on a long breakaway run on the right side, pushing a shot right of charging senior goalkeeper John Londono to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead just 8:07 into the contest. The Raiders held on to the lead despite being out-shot, 7-3, during the first 45 minutes.
Freshman midfielder Jose Arevalo scored just into the 66th minute on a low cross from the middle of the 18 from Simeon to level the score before breaking away on a through pass from near midfield from freshman forward Luis Valasquez to give the Cougars (5-3-0, NJAC 1-1-0) the lead for good.
Kean played two men down for the final 17 minutes, surviving a penalty kick and nine Scarlet Raider shots from the field. The Cougars did not attempt a shot during the closing minutes but still finished in a 16-16 stalemate in shots for the match.

Paul Tarnawski saved a goal in the 15th minute, clearing a shot by junior back Dominick DeLello which was headed into the right side of the goal past diving freshman goalkeeper

Broomall finished with five saves while Londono made three of his four saves in second half.
Rutgers-Newark (5-3-0, NJAC 1-1-0), which saw its winning streak snapped at four, travels to Ramapo (4-3-0, NJAC 1-1-0) on Saturday at 1 p.m. for another NJAC contest.
