NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark battled The College of New Jersey, ranked 23rd in the nation, but fell to the Lions, 5-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match in Alumni Stadium.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

In their second consecutive match against a conference foe ranked in the national top 25, the Scarlet Raiders (1-9-1, NJAC 0-4-1) again trailed just 2-0 at the half before depth took its toll in the second 45 minutes.

The Lions (9-1-0, NJAC 4-1-0) piled up a 29-2 edge in shots and denied Rutgers-Newark a corner kick.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Benoit made five saves for the Raiders while TCNJ sophomores Kendra Griffith and Cristina Gacos shared a shutout without either being forced to make a save.

Junior midfielder Kathy Jironza took both Raider shots, firing an attempt wide in the 34th minute and sending a free kick wide right in the 54th.

Five different Lions netted goals with senior midfielder Allyson Anderson notching a goal and an assist.  Freshman midfielder Taylor Lusardi scored the first goal by putting away the rebound of an on-goal free kick by sophomore defender Jordan Downs in the 24th minute.

Anderson scored on a cross into the middle from senior forward Maria Grady in the 57th minute, and less than two and a half minutes later freshman forward Kendal Bernardini's shot from near the right end line slipped through Benoit's grasp to make it 4-0.

Freshman forward Justine Larocca headed in a free kick from the left side by freshman midfielder Emma Culleton in the 68th minute to cap the scoring.

The Raiders, who suffered their fourth straight NJAC loss following a tie against Rutgers-Camden to begin league play, get a much needed 10-day break from conference play.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Drew University on Monday night at 7:30 on Alumni Field before travelling to FDU-Florham for a 7 o'clock contest on Wednesday.
