NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark battled Rowan University for 90 minutes, but the 14-2 Profs netted two early goals to escape Alumni Field with a 2-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference win.
The Scarlet Raiders (5-10-1, NJAC 1-5-0) put just one fewer shot on goal than the Profs (14-2-0, NJAC 6-1-0) in the upset bid, but Rowan freshman goalkeeper Carleigh Trivino made three saves for her sixth shutout as Rowan notched its 11th team shutout of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Diana Aviles stopped two shots in the second half to keep things close as Rowan built an 11-5 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Seniors Renae McEvoy and Alexis Sutton and sophomore Cristina Estremera put shots on goal for the Raiders.
Rutgers-Newark's best chance to score came in the 67th minute when Sutton headed a corner kick from the right side by McEvoy toward the right side of the net. But Trivino snared the crisp shot to preserve the shutout.
Senior midfielder Miranda Donnian hammered in what proved to be the game-winning goal just 4:11 into the contest after taking a crossing pass form the top of the 18 from junior midfielder Jess Durnian.
High-scoring junior forward Erika Suhl provided some breathing room by firing a shot over Aviles from 15 yards out in the 11th minute.
The loss snapped a two-match winning streak for the Raiders.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Ramapo College on Alumni Field on Monday night at 7:30 in an NJAC match.
