NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark stayed close to red-hot Drew University well into the second half, but the Rangers took a 3-0 decision on Alumni Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Diana Aviles made three of her five saves in the opening period when the Scarlet Raiders (5-12-1) went toe-to-toe with Drew (13-1-0) which extended its school record winning streak to 11. Each team took five shots with the Raiders barely missing on two opportunities while Drew scored what proved to be the winning goal off of a corner kick.

On the Raiders' initial attack, freshman forward Paige Lazar rifled a shot just wide right on the end of a breakaway run just 24 seconds into the contest. In the 24th minute, junior forward Victoria Nunez hammered a shot just left of the post. Those were the best chances that the Raiders would get on the night.

Sophomore defender Alexa Kogan headed in a corner kick from the right side by senior midfielder Katie O'Keefe in the 15th minute to give Drew a slim 1-0 lead.

A defensive struggled lasted until sophomore forward Emma Campbell collected a loose ball on the right side of the 18 and got a low shot past Aviles inside the right post to give the Rangers some breathing room.

In the 78th minute, sophomore midfielder Mel Santos sent a through ball to senior forward Liz Loiodice inside the right side of the box. Loiodice put her 12th goal of the season into the right side of the goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Jackson got the win in her first collegiate action and shared a shutout with classmate Andee Higgins as the rookies split halves. Jackson stopped two Raider shots in the first 45 minutes while Higgins preserved the shutout with one stop in the second period.

A strong second half allowed the Rangers to construct a 17-6 edge in shots while the visitors also dominated corner kicks, 11-1.

Rutgers-Newark travels to William Paterson on Saturday at 6 p.m. for a New Jersey Athletic Conference showdown before closing out its regular season on Alumni Field against Richard Stockton on Wednesday. Six seniors will be honored on Senior Night.
