NEWARK, NJ – Junior guard John Snow poured in a career-high 27 points in just 25 minutes as Rutgers-Newark raced past Montclair State, 87-70, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in The Golden Dome Arena.
Snow posted his fourth 20-point game of the season by connecting on eight of nine shots from the floor – including three of four from beyond the arc – and eight of 10 free throws as the Scarlet Raiders (4-2, NJAC 1-1) led wire-to-wire. A 3-point jumper by Snow gave Rutgers-Newark its biggest lead of the night at 72-43 with 9:19 left.
Junior forward Christian Garcia totaled 11 points, a game-high eight rebounds and five assists for the Raiders who also got a dozen points from junior guard Chris Foreman who came off the bench to drain all four of his shots from 3-point range as Rutgers-Newark pulled away to a 35-18 lead with 4:46 remaining in the opening period.
Junior guard Doze Ikwuegbu notched 11 points and six rebounds to help the Raiders control the backboards, 34-23, while reserve forward David Azoroh added eight points.
Senior guard Daniel Singleton paced the Red Hawks (2-3, NJAC 1-1) with 13 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals while sophomore forward Kevin McGorry chipped in a dozen points, three rebounds and a blocked shot. Freshman guard Erick Lofton-Harris netted 11 points with three assists while reserve center Michael Spence hit three of four shots from the floor to finish with eight points.
Snow's marksmanship helped the Raiders shoot a season's best 57.7% (30-52) from the floor buoyed by the team's nine-of-13 accuracy from long range.
Each team went 18 for 27 from the free throw line.
