Manuel Felipez piled up a match-high 17 kills but Barton College notched a 3-0 win in Wilson Gymnasium. Games scores were 25-18, 25-21, 26-24.
The Scarlet Raiders (2-12) got 9.5 points from freshman outside hitter
Travis Mintzer who totaled six kills, two solo blocks and three assisted blocks. Mintzer hit .600 (6 kills, 0 errors, 10 attacks) to boost the Raiders' attack percentage to .138 (32-22-94), but the Bulldogs (2-18) hit a season's best .290 (49-18-107) to register their first home win of the season and snap a six-match losing streak.
Freshman outside hitter
Colin Ferguson added seven kills, a solo block and two assisted blocks for Rutgers-Newark while freshman setter
Adrian Lopez tallied 24 assists in just two sets.
Sophomore outside hitter Zach McCalla notched 16 kills and freshman outside hitter Cameron Hudson chipped in 11 for Barton. Sophomore setter Jordan Robinson amassed 40 assists while dumping in four kills to fuel the Bulldog attack. Sophomore middle blocker Ladislav Lelkes posted nine kills and got in on four of Barton's nine blocks.
McCalla had five kills as Barton led wire-to-wire in game one before Rutgers-Newark battled back in the second and third sets before falling.
Felipez posted five kills in game two when there were six ties and four lead changes before Barton reeled of four straight points on a pair of McCalla kills and two Raider attack errors to take a 16-13 lead. Rutgers-Newark cut the lead to two points twice before the Bulldogs pulled away to win by four.
In the third frame, there were 15 ties and seven lead changes as Felipez put down eight kills to pace the Raiders. A Felipez kill denied Barton the first match point before sophomore outside hitter Brennan O'Connor and Hudson delivered back-to-back kills to end the night.
Rutgers-Newark returns to The Golden Dome Arena on Saturday at 2 p.m. for an EIVA match against Princeton.
