Scarlet Raiders Fall To NJIT, 3-0, In EIVA Match

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark sophomore outside hitter Manuel Felipez notched a match-high 11 kills, but NJIT posted a 3-0 EIVA win in the Fleisher Center.  Game scores were 25-18, 25-14, 25-18.

The Scarlet Raiders (2-14, EIVA 0-9) got eight kills from freshman outside hitter Travis Mintzer while freshman middle hitter Cody Chidsey added three kills, a solo block and an assisted block, but Rutgers-Newark hit just .066 (29 kills, 23 errors, 91 attacks) to suffer its 13th straight defeat.

Rookie setters Adrian Lopez and Kevin McCandless totaled 16 assists with Lopez registering 16 in two sets and McCandless, 10 in one.  Rookie libero Andy Guinto posted a team-high eight digs.

NJIT (5-18, EIVA 2-7) snapped a four-match losing streak behind a balanced attack led by senior right side Doug Battersby with eight kills, an ace and four assisted blocks.  The Highlanders did not allow the Raider a service ace while dominating the net with nine blocks to Rutgers-Newark's three.

The Highlanders took the opening frame despite five kills from Felipez by finishing the game with a 6-1 spurt.  NJIT hit .407 (13-2-27) with five blocks in the first set to set the stage for the rest of the evening.

The Highlanders hit .304 (12-5-23) in game two and .500 (14-2-24) in the final set to cruise to victory.

Rutgers-Newark travels to the Springfield Invitational on Friday and Saturday to play four non-conference matches starting with a 5 p.m. contest against Lesley College on Friday.  After a 7 p.m. Friday night battled against host Springfield College, the Raiders take on Southern Vermont at 10 a.m. and the Sage Colleges at noon on Saturday.
