Scarlet Raiders Snap Skid With 77-62 Win Over Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, NJ – Rutgers-Newark junior guard John Snow tallied 14 of his 26 points in the first half of a 77-62 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Rutgers-Camden in the RUC Athletic & Fitness Center.

The Scarlet Raiders (7-5, NJAC 3-2) snapped a 3-game slide as Snow keyed a pair of first-half runs which staked Rutgers-Newark to a 36-24 halftime edge.

Snow started and ended a 9-0 run with a jump shot and a 3-point jumper to give the Scarlet Raiders the lead for good at 20-12 with 7:39 left in the opening period.  Freshman guard Marcus Taylor hit a layup to give the Raptors a 12-11 lead before the decisive Rutgers-Newark run.

A 3-point jumper by sophomore guard Steve Schneider trimmed the Raptor deficit to 24-21 with 2:55 left in the opening period before the Raiders closed out the half with a 12-3 run.  Snow converted a conventional 3-point play with 1:30 remaining before pushing the lead at the break to a dozen with a pair of free throws with 16 seconds on the clock.

The Raptors (2-9, NJAC 1-4) never got closer than nine points early in the second period before Rutgers-Newark pulled away to lead 66-46 with 6:11 remaining on a 3-point jumper by junior guard Doze Ikwuegbu.

Snow knocked down all three of his long-range jumpers while hitting seven of 10 from the field and nine of 11 free throws.  His accuracy helped Rutgers-Newark shoot a season's best 59.5 per cent (25-42) from the floor.

Junior forward Christian Garcia had a strong all-around game with 14 points, seven rebounds, a game-high five assists and four steals while junior forward Allen Kuiper came off the bench for seven rebounds and six points. 

Raider sophomore guard Rahim Bunch made three of four shots from the floor on his way to eight points, two assists and a steal in his first career start in Scarlet & Black.  Ikwuegbu finished with seven points and three steals while rookie guard Darrian Collins notched seven points and three assists.

Taylor paced the Rutgers-Camden with 18 points, four assists and two steals while junior forward Alex Smart totaled 14 points and four rebounds.  Sophomore guard John Tatem barely missed a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Rutgers-Newark plays its third NJAC doubleheader in five days on Wednesday, hosting Ramapo in The Golden Dome Arena.  The women's game tips off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8.
