NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark survived a torrid start by Ramapo to post a 64-61 New Jersey Athletic Conference win in The Golden Dome Arena.
Sophomore forward
Jordan McDaniel netted 13 of his team-high 15 points and junior guard
John Snow added 10 of his 13 in the second half as the Scarlet Raiders (8-5, NAJC 4-2) erased a 12-point deficit to win for the second straight time in league play. The Roadrunners (5-8, NJAC 2-4) lost their second consecutive conference battle.
Ramapo jumped out to a quick 17-5 lead during the first four minutes and held a 40-27 lead at the half, but the Raiders would not allow the visitors to break away.
After Ramapo junior guard Joshua Daniell hit a layup to put the Roadrunners up 45-33 with 14:34 left, Rutgers-Newark responded with a decisive 26-6 run. McDaniel, who started the rally with a dunk, poured in 11 points and Snow added eight points including a pair of free throws to cap the outburst with 2:15 left to make it 59-51.
But Ramapo would not go quietly as freshman guard George Sapp attacked the lane for four acrobatic layups in heavy traffic during the closing minutes with the last one whittling the Raider advantage to two points with just 2.6 seconds remaining.
Rutgers-Newark sophomore forward
David Azoroh made the first of two free throws after being fouled with 1.7 seconds on the clock, robbing Ramapo of a chance for a final desperation shot.
McDaniel posted his first double-double in Scarlet & Black, finishing with 11 rebounds while connected on six of eight shots from the floor. His point and rebound totals were career highs. Snow added three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Junior forward
Christian Garcia tallied nine points, three rebounds and a pair of assists while Azoroh and junior guard
Doze Ikwuegbu contributed eight points apiece. Freshman guard
Darrian Collins came off the bench to net seven points – five of which came during the 26-6 outburst.
Senior guard Terry Hicks fueled Ramapo's first half pyrotechnics by hitting four of six shots from beyond the arc while scoring 20 of his game-high 21 points. Sapp hit all five of his second half field goal attempts to finish with 10 points in just 16 minutes.
Roadrunner junior center Elvonney Poole notched eight points while Daniell hauled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with six points.
After connecting on just 30.8 percent of their shots during the first 20 minutes, the Raiders drained 13 of 26 field goal attempts in the final period.
After Ramapo turned a dozen first-half turnovers by the Rutgers-Newark into 20 points, the Raiders generated 15 points on 13 Roadrunner miscues after the break.
