WAYNE, NJ – Sophomore forward Charlie O'Connell notched the golden goal in the 108th minute as Rutgers University-Newark survived an upset bid by William Paterson, 2-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match in the Pioneer Soccer Park.

O'Connell headed in a corner kick from senior forward Edgar Abreu with 2:57 left in the second overtime as the Scarlet Raiders (14-2-0, NJAC 6-0-0) barely kept the longest winning streak in NCAA D-III intact against the inspired Pioneers (6-7-2, NJAC 1-4-1).  It was the first overtime play of the season for the Scarlet Raiders while the Pioneers went into extra time for the seventh time where they have a 1-4-2 record.

Sophomore midfielder Anthony DeRisi staked the Raiders to a 1-0 halftime edge when he put away a loose ball in the box off of a throw in which was redirected by O'Connell in the 13th minute.  It was DeRisi's first goal of the season.

Rutgers-Newark dominated play in the opening period, out-shooting the Pioneers, 8-2, and allowing no shots on goal.  WPU sophomore goalkeeper Mike Diacheysn made three of his five saves in regulation in the opening frame to keep things close.

WPU levelled the contest in the 77th minute when senior defender Marcus Hackett ran onto a through ball from junior midfielder Mike Conte and put a shot inside the right post.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Broomall made three saves in the final 12:17 of regulation to get the Raiders into the extra period.  Hackett put a header on-goal ahead of a pair of shots by senior midfielder Rafael Marques that forced Broomall to make plays in the final nine minutes.  The Pioneers were level on shots with Rutgers-Newark, 6-6, in the second half.

Rutgers-Newark kept alive the longest winning streak in NCAA D-III by posting its 14th straight victory.  Defending national champion and top-rated Messiah (13-0-1), which had reeled off 19 straight wins dating back to last season, saw its streak derailed on Tuesday with a double-overtime scoreless tie at Stevenson.

The Raiders have gone unbeaten and untied since starting the season with back-to-back losses to Emory and Covenant in Atlanta, Ga., during the last weekend in August.  During the streak, Rutgers-Newark has outscored its opponents 44-7 with seven shutouts.  The other seven opponents registered one goal each.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Kean in an NJAC contest at 7:30 Saturday night on Alumni Field.
