Box Score NEW PALTZ, NY – Rutgers University-Newark overwhelmed SUNY Cobleskill, 5-0, in the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament on the campus SUNY New Paltz to get off to a 2-0-0 start for the first time since 2010.
Junior midfielder
Sara Corson had two goals and an assist while senior forward
Sarah Cunha notched three assists in a match for the first time in her career in a dominating performance by the Scarlet Raiders.
Sophomore forward
Paige Lazar, who peppered six of her seven shots on goal, headed in what proved to be the game winner just 6:52 into the contest on a cross into the box from Cunha.
Cunha fired a shot into the box which was redirected by Corson for a goal less than two minutes later. Junior midfielder
Cristina Estremera ran the Raider advantage to 3-0 by putting away a Cunha pass into the box in the 14
th minute.
Corson gave the Raiders a 4-goal lead at the half when she took a pass from junior forward
Sara Ramirez, dribbled into the box and fired a shot past Cobleskill freshman goalkeeper Sabrina Adams with only 16:05 off the clock.
Rutgers-Newark piled up a 20-1 edge in shots during the opening period as Raider head coach
Bill Bustamante went to his bench early and often. The Raiders finished with a 30-2 advantage in shots and took all seven of the corner kicks in the contest.
Sophomore defender
Victoria Benet scored off of a corner kick by Corson in the 53
rd minute to finish the scoring. Corson now has four goals and nine points in her first two matches in Scarlet & Black.
Senior
Diana Aviles (1-0-0) and freshman
Diana Carvalho shared the goalkeeping shutout. Each played a half and they faced one shot apiece without needing a save.
Adams made four saves in each half for the Tigers (0-1-0).
Rutgers-Newark visits The College of Staten Island on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before kicking off its home season by hosting the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic on Alumni Field next weekend. Brooklyn College, SUNY New Paltz and Frostburg State join the Raiders in the 2-day invitational.
