PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 3, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team suffered a pair of defeats on the second day of the Wildcat Classic hosted by Johnson & Whales University in Providence.
The Scarlet Raiders were defeated 3-0 by Rhode Island College in the opener, and fell by the same score in the nightcap to the hosts. R-N finished the tournament with a ledger of 1-3 and is now 9-6 overall.
The Scarlet Raiders return to the hardwood at Rowan University Tuesday night in a New Jersey Athletic Conference showdown.
Junior
Kathy Hormaza led Rutgers-Newark on offense with 11 kills in two matches. Senior
Sharee Gordon accumulated a total of eight blocks, while sophomore
Bryanna Urbaez pocketed 34 assists. Sophomore
Sue Riley tallied 23 digs to lead the defense.
RIC 3, R-N 0Rhode Island College won by set scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-20 and has a record of 10-5 after the tournament.
Hormaza led the Scarlet Raiders with eight kills and eight digs, while freshman
Jess Moy and junior
Tabitha Davis each recorded a trio of kills. Freshman
Analis Capobianco had a team-high 18 digs and two aces and Urbaez dished out a team-high 19 assists. Riley had 17 digs and senior
Sharee Gordon led the blockers with six.
R-N was out-pointed 51-34 and RIC held a 42-21 advantage in kills. Each team was above 60 digs with the Scarlet Raiders tallying 62 and Rhode Island scooping up 66.
Rutgers hit .118 in the match with a set-best of .235 coming in the third when it had 10 kills and just two errors. RIC swung .235, going .333 in the second behind 14 kills in two errors.
Johnson & Whales 3, R-N 0J&W (11-5) took advantage of a banged up Rutgers-Newark squad, playing without several key pieces throughout the weekend. The hosts won by set scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-21.
The Raiders struggled to get any momentum going on offense throughout the match, swinging -.122 overall, while Johnson & Whales hit .293 - including .350 in the second set and .323 in the third.
The tournament hosts recorded 50 points compared to 25 for R-N, also ending with a 34-17 margin in kills. Rutgers-Newark held a 35-34 advantage in digs.
Hormaza led the way with three kills, 12 digs and two aces, with sophomore
Lisamarie Acosta tallying a team-best three kills as well. Davis and Gordon each had a pair of blocks, while Urbaez handed out 15 assists. Riley (six) and Urbaez (four) combined for 10 digs.
