Box Score 2 ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Rutgers University-Newark ran its winning streak to nine matches with straight-set victories over the College of Staten Island and the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bard Raptor Tournament.
The Scarlet Raiders (9-5) routed Staten Island (4-8), 25-12, 25-9, 25-12, before sweeping Mount St. Vincent (6-3), 25-12, 27-25, 25-18.
In the win over CSI, junior middle hitter
Cody Chidsey hammered down seven kills on as many swings and freshman outside hitter
Corey Pieper had five kills on five attacks as Rutgers-Newark hit a torrid .472 (33 kills, 8 errors, 53 attacks). Junior setter
Kevin McCandless had 28 assists and three aces.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jose Mendez roped five of the Raiders' 13 service aces while adding eight kills and a blocking assist for a match-high 13.5 points. Sophomore middle hitter
Nick Kuti notched 9.5 points with four kills on four swings, four solo blocks, a blocking assist and an ace. Pieper chipped in a pair of aces and a solo block for 8.0 points in just two games.
The Dolphins managed just six kills against the Raiders who amassed 10.5 blocks to drive CSI into negative attack numbers in each game.
In the win over Mount St. Vincent, Chidsey hit .750 with a match-high 13 kills on 16 swings with only one error. He added an ace to finish with a match-high 14.0 points.
McCandless, who served two of the team's four aces, distributed 37 assists as the Raiders hit .387 (42-13-75).
Kuti got in on seven of the Raiders' nine blocks while putting down seven kills with one error on nine attacks for 12.5 points. Mendez notched nine kills with an ace and a solo block for 11.0 points while Pieper added five kills, a solo block and a pair of blocking assists. Junior libero
Quocmy Nguyen came up with six of the Raiders' 12 digs.
Sophomore opposite Tyler Cucullu led the Dolphins with eight kills while freshman outside hitter Michael Kochen added six kills and a pair of aces. Senior middle hitter Brett Holiday hit .600 (6-0-10), but the Raiders limited Mount St. Vincent to 26 kills and a .167 hitting percentage.
Rutgers-Newark finishes play in the 2-day event against City College of New York at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Stevenson Athletic Center.
