NEWARK, N.J. (April 11, 2015) – The Rutgers-Newark men's tennis team improved to 1-1 in the GNAC and 4-2 overall with a 6-3 victory over Albertus Magnus College Saturday at The Golden Dome Tennis Courts.
The Scarlet Raiders trailed 2-1 after doubles. Nadeem Hilal and senior Ray Fan opened with an 8-3 loss at No. 1, before veteran
Derence Tejero and
Eison DeGuzman picked up an 8-4 victory at No. 2 to get R-N on the board. Albertus Magnus earned a hard-fought win at third doubles with Dan Constantinidi and Ahmed Abdulateef prevailing over Faisal Shahid and
Benjamin Lioue, 8-6.
R-N won five of the six singles matches played on the day to earn the come-from-behind triumph. Winning at No. 1 was Fan who came back to win a three-set thriller 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 over Pete Zacharias. Tejero made it 2-for-2 on the back of a 6-2, 6-1 rout at second singles, and Hilal followed with a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory out of the third slot against Jeff Pellegrino. DeGuzman went 6-2, 6-1 over Mezzei at No. 4 and Abdulateef earned the last host win of the day, going 6-4, 6-3 out of the fifth slot.
Both Tejero and DeGuzman were responsible for two points apiece, earning victories in their singles matches and teaming up to earn the Scarlet Raider win at No. 2 doubles.
Rutgers-Newark will look to make it two wins in a row when it hosts Bloomfield College Monday at 3:30 p.m.
