NEWARK, N.J. (April 19, 2015) – The Rutgers-Newark men's tennis team defeated rival Rutgers-Camden by a score of 7-2 Sunday at The Golden Dome Tennis Courts.
The win clinches a spot in the GNAC Tournament as the Scarlet Raiders will take on Ramapo College for a berth in the conference championship on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Mahwah.
The Scarlet Raiders are now 6-3, having won three straight and four of their last five outings. Rutgers-Camden drops to 1-6.
The No. 2 singles team of
Derence Tejero and
Eison DeGuzman put the Scarlet Raiders on top 1-0 with a dominating 8-1 win and R-N went on top 2-0 when Ray Fan and Nadeem Hilal won 8-4 at No. 1 singles.
Holding a 2-1 lead after doubles play, Rutgers-Newark clinched the match when Tejero won at No. 2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) out of the second slot, giving the hosts a 5-1 lead. DeGuzman won out of the fifth slot to put Rutgers-Newark on top 3-1, going 6-1, 6-2 over Ryan Christopher, and Fan was victorious at No. 1, 6-2, 6-3. After Tejero, Hilal won at No. 4 and Rizk at No. 3 for the final Newark victories. Rizk took his match 6-2, 6-3 and Hilal won by a score of 6-1, 6-3.
Matt Palka battled mightily at No. 6, eventually falling in a thriller 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 to Geoffrey Bandad.
