NEWARK, N.J. (April 27, 2015) – The Rutgers-Newark men's tennis team improved to 7-4 overall with a thrilling 5-4 win over FDU-Florham Monday night on The Golden Dome Tennis Courts.
FDU falls to 6-9 in defeat.
After the Raiders earned two of the three doubles points, FDU came back to win the next two matches to go on top, 3-2. The Devils were victorious 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3.
Senior
Derence Tejero evened the match at 3-3 with a clutch, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Steve Serras, but a loss at No. 2 put FDU one win away from the victory.
Nadeem Hilal was the next Scarlet Raider to finish – playing out of the fifth slot he earned a tight 7-5, 6-4 win over Jason Dubinsky to tie the match. Sophomore
Eison DeGuzman was the hero, taking an absolute thriller at No. 6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) for the win. DeGuzman battled Ryan O'Keefe and was able to lock up the Raiders' seventh triumph of the season.
Tejero and Guzman won at second doubles in another amazing battle. The pair from Newark won 9-8 and took a 10-8 tiebreak. Veteran
Youssef Rizk and Hilal pulled out a key victory at third doubles, going 9-8 as well and needing a 7-5 tiebreak to ice that win.
