AMHERST, Mass. (November 18, 2016) –
The nationally-ranked No. 10 Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team will take on 22nd-ranked SUNY Oneonta Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the 'Sweet 16' of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
 
It will be the Scarlet Raiders' first-ever appearance in the Sectional round of the tournament, and their match will be after host Amherst College battles Brandeis University on Hitchcock Field at 11 a.m.
 
Rutgers-Newark advanced to the third round of the national tournament with a pair of wins on its home turf last weekend. The Scarlet Raiders blanked North Atlantic Conference Champion New England College Saturday, and then shutout Elizabethtown College in the second round on Sunday.
 
Oneonta is making its third-straight appearance in the Sectional round of the tournament and fourth appearance in the last six seasons. The Red Dragons topped St. John Fisher College and Eastern University in rounds one and two on its home field, getting by EU in double overtime.
 
The Scarlet Raiders bring in an overall record of 20-3-0 to the 'Sweet 16', while Oneonta boasts a record of 16-6-1. The 20 wins are a program-record for Rutgers-Newark as are its 13 shutouts.
 
Newark has had an incredibly strong defense throughout the season, allowing just 14 goals against (.61 goals per game). Senior Dylan Elias, sophomore Brandon Goldy, junior Isaiah Kuris and junior Arek Szoldrowski have done a superb job in front of all-conference rookie goalkeeper Andres Medina who has 95 saves and 18 wins this year.
 
As a team, the Scarlet Raiders rank No. 3 nationally in save percentage (.884), No. 11 in winning percentage (.870), No. 14 in team goals-against average (.61), No. 15 in shutout percentage (.57), No. 23 in total goals (56), No. 24 in total points (154) and No. 30 in total assists (42).
 
Offensively, Rutgers-Newark has been balanced all season as 19 players have points, 14 players have goals and 10 players have multiple markers. Freshman Fabio De Sousa, senior Sebastian Gostynski, junior Alex Torres, sophomore Stefano Muniz and junior Chigozie Atubi all have double-digit points, with De Sousa – the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Rookie of the Year – pacing the Scarlet Raiders with 14 goals and eight assists. De Sousa ranks second nationally in game-winning tallies (eight), and Gostynski, Torres, Atubi and Kuris all have recorded multiple game-winners.
 
Overall, Oneonta has scored 52 goals while holding its opponents to 20. The Red Dragons have recorded nine shutouts and have outshot their opponents, 388-207.
 
Individually, the Red Dragons have five players who have registered double-digits in points including two seniors, one junior, one sophomore and a freshman.  State University of New York Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year Witman Hernandez leads Oneonta with 27 points on 11 goals and five assists. Senior Hans Purtell and classmate Dillon Johnson have 18 and 14 points, respectively.
 
In goal, freshman Ryan Wilson has logged 1,931 minutes between the pipes during his rookie year. He is 16-4-1 overall with a 0.65 goals-against average.
 
Rutgers-Newark is making its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last four seasons, falling in the first round in 2013, advancing to the second round in 2014 and now playing in the third round in 2016. The Scarlet Raiders are 3-2-0 all-time in the national tournament and have won six of their last seven win-or-go-home matches over the last three seasons.
