Preseason Poll
WINTHROP, Mass. (March 21, 2016) - The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team was picked second in its division in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Tennis Preseason Poll, it was recently announced by the league office.
Suffolk topped the north division and Ramapo College topped the south, with the Scarlet Raiders coming in 10 points behind the Roadrunners in the south. Albertus Magnus and Rutgers University-Camden were tied for third in the south, while Norwich and Johnson & Wales were second and third in the north division of the conference.
Ramapo finished with 28 points and seven first-place votes, while the Scarlet Raiders had 18. AM and R-C each had 12.
Rutgers-Newark earned a berth to the GNAC Playoffs in 2015, going 2-1 in the conference and 7-4 overall. Newark fell to Ramapo in the semifinals and hopes to make the conference tournament again this year with an eye on advancing to the title match.
R-N has nine home matches on the schedule and will play two this week - Tuesday against Baruch College and Thursday against Brooklyn College. The Scarlet Raiders open conference play at Rutgers-Camden on April 9, host preseason favorite Ramapo on April 16 and visit Albertus Magnus on April 23.
The top two teams from each division in the GNAC will square off in the conference semis, and the divisional champs play for an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship.
