NEWARK, N.J. (March 24, 2016) - The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team earned its first win of the season Thursday, shutting out visiting Brooklyn College 9-0 on The Golden Dome Courts.
The Scarlet Raiders even their record at 1-1 and will visit Pratt on Saturday. Brooklyn drops to 1-2.
First-year Head Coach
Tom Battaglia earned his first win as the Rutgers-Newark men's coach and was happy with the result.
"It's nice to get the first one out of the way," said Battaglia. "I saw a lot of good things today and we did what we had to, but we still have a long way to go. It's important to use these early-season non-conference matches to keep getting better so when the GNAC season rolls around we are playing at the top of our game.
The Scarlet Raiders swept the doubles action.
Nadeem Hilal and
Richard Nguyen teamed for an 8-3 win at No. 1,
Stan Wu and
Joe Codomo went 8-0 at two and
Raheel Khawaja and
Benjamin Lioue rolled 8-2 at three.
The match of the night came at No. 1 singles where Nguyen came back to win a thriller off Ashley Matthieu. After dropping the first set 6-7, Nguyen took the second set 6-3 before winning the third 10-7.
Hilal dropped just a single game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles and Codomo won 6-0. 6-1 at three.
Noman Makhdoom earned an 8-2 (pro set) win out of the fourth slot, while Lioue won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5.
Mazzen Elebrashy accounted for the ninth point by not dropping a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at sixth singles.
