Men’s Tennis Wins 5-4 Thriller at Pratt

Box Score

NEWARK, N.J. (March 26, 2016) -
Senior Benjamin Lioue earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to clinch a thrilling 5-4 non-conference win at Pratt for the Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team.

With the win, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 2-1 on the young 2016 season, and they will host St. Joseph's College - Long Island Thursday at 5 p.m. in Newark. Pratt falls to 0-4 with the loss.

The Scarlet Raiders were able to take a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with the biggest win of the match arguably coming from Joe Codomo and Stan Wu out of the second slot. The Scarlet Raider pair won an incredibly tight showdown over Andy Barkett and Hubert Chen, 9-8, earning a 10-8 victory in the tiebreaker to seal the triumph.

"If we don't get that win at No. 2 doubles, we probably don't win the match," Head Coach Tom Battaglia said. "Joe and Stan battled for us and were able to get the job done, so they deserve a lot of credit."

Pratt earned wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles, earning three-set victories at two and three. Sophomore Nadeem Hilal fell short 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 10-2, and Codomo was defeated 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.

Wu was responsible for the third Scarlet Raider point, winning 6-1, 7-5 over Chen, and Raheel Khawaja rolled 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Lioue clinched the victory at No. 6, dropping Hoatian Zhang, 6-3, 6-0.

"It was tough playing today indoors and on a rubber surface, but the guys pulled through," added Battaglia. "We arrived earlier than normal to get used to things, and the team did the rest."

Lioue and Khawaja picked up the second Newark doubles point out of the third slot, rolling 8-2 as that duo along with Wu went 2-0 on the day.

Thursday's match with St. Joe's is slated for a 5 p.m. opening serve from The Golden Dome Courts.

Box score and cumulative stats will be posted late Saturday or as soon as possible.
